To Better understand how this device works, and what it actually detects, you will need to understand a little about the Science behind it.
PARTS OF AN ATOM
In the middle of each atom is a "nucleus." The nucleus contains two kinds of tiny particles, called protons and neutrons. Orbiting around the nucleus are even smaller particles called electrons.
Protons, neutrons and electrons are very different from each other. They have their own properties, or characteristics. One of these properties is called an electrical charge. Protons have what we call a "positive" (+) charge. Electrons have a "negative" (-) charge. Neutrons have no charge, they are neutral. The charge of one proton is equal in strength to the charge of one electron. When the number of protons in an atom equals the number of electrons, the atom itself has no overall charge, it is neutral.
The protons and neutrons in the nucleus are held together very tightly. Normally the nucleus does not change. But some of the outer electrons are held very loosely. They can move from one atom to another. An atom that looses electrons has more positive charges (protons) than negative charges (electrons). It is positively charged. An atom that gains electrons has more negative than positive particles. It has a negative charge. A charged atom is called an "ion." With this understanding, Static electricity is created by an imbalance of Positive and Negative Charges on the surface of some object or material.

Static Electricity can consist of extremely high voltage, this device can sense those high-voltage electrically charged objects at a great distance at a detection sensitivity as low as 500mV. Electro-static is usually created when materials are pulled apart or rubbed together. Basically, it is the imbalance between (+) positive and (-) negative particles on these objects or surfaces. Although the atoms on these surfaces are always full of charges, they become "electrified" whenever their pre-existing + and - charges are not equal. Some typical examples would be wool, plastic, or even the soles of your shoes as you walk across the carpet. This process causes positive (+) charges to collect on one material and negative (-) Charges on the other surface. An e-field Pod can be compared to a magnetic field, except that it's electrical in nature. Another way of looking at it is that an e-field is a voltage without a current, and whenever you have pure voltage, then you will have a pure electric field with no magnetism involved.

Keep in mind that during use, Static electricity is formed much better when the air is dry or the humidity is low. The E-field Pod can detect static up to several feet when the air is very dry. When the air is humid, water molecules can collect on the surface of various materials and this can prevent the buildup of electrical charges and minimize the detection range considerably. The E-Pods simply detect the presence of the E-Field around the static, it does not measure the Static Charge. You would need a very expensive Electrostatic voltmeter for that.
 
How to Use the E-Pod
Insert a 9 Vdc Alkaline battery into the base of the E-Pod and extend the mini telescopic antenna. Turn on the E-Pod toggle switch and place the unit on a table or desk. The light may or may not be illuminated at this time, it really depends on the “+” or “-” static charge around the E-Pod at the time. With all three lights activated "ON", Stand about 6 feet away from the device and take a plastic pen or comb and rub it in your hair a few times. Now take the pen or comb and move it slowly toward the E-Pod-AMP device.  The comb or pen should have a negative “-” charge on it, which will make the GREEN light turn OFF. Move closer and the BLUE light will turn OFF. When you get within a few inches of the device, the RED light will turn OFF. You will notice that the lights will begin to dim and then go out completely as the pen gets closer to each detection field. Move the pen or comb away, and the lights will turn back ON and glow bright again. Depending on the humidity and other factors, the E-Pod-AMP can easily detect a static charge up to 12 feet away. 
 
Note: With a Negative charged condition, the lights will remain ON and as a charged object slowly approaches the E-Pod-AMP, the GREEN, BLUE and RED lights will begin to dim in relationship to the e-field strength and proximity to the static source. Eventually all of the the lights will go off when the charge is within a few inches of the E-Pod. The lights will slowly come back on again when the charged object moves away from the E-Pod-AMP.
Note: With a Positive charged condition, the light will remain OFF and as a charged object gets close to the E-Pod, the light will come on. It then turns OFF when the charged object is removed.

Measures ELF Down to 30Hz!
It has been  the generally accepted theory that spirits do emit an extremely low frequency (ELF) EM field, which commonly registers between 2.0 and 7.0 mG in strength. Typically, anything below 40Hz would be considered part of the ELF range. The Mel-8704 was designed to address this ELF range, and is actually 20Hz lower than a KII's 50Hz bandwidth.
Custom Red "Night View" Display
The Backlight display measures a full 2" x 1" with a 0.60" EMF display and 0.25" Ambient Temperature on the same screen. Both measurements can be read from 10' to 15' away.
The display can be turned On or OFF manually for display viewing in dark areas, and it is also bright enough so that it can be used in total darkness to navigate stairwells, corridors and door ways. Illumination of objects up to 8' away is possible with this special display once your eyes become adjusted to the light.

This feature utilizes a high sensitivity Accelerometer to detect just the slightest Touch or Vibration. Another useful tool to engage spirit when gathering evidence. Imagine something so sensitive that it detects a cotton ball, paper clip, piece of popcorn or a slight tap of your finger anywhere on a 8 long wood table top! Or, being able to detect a foot "stomp" on a 4" slab of concrete from 30' away!
It can even detect the sound pressure level / frequency from your voice if you shout toward it from 4' away. many people have felt the sensation of a touch on their arm, shoulder, back and so on. If Spirit is willing to cooperate, just the slightest "Touch" anywhere on the Mel meter will be detected and acknowledged with a short 2 sec "beep" and then reset.

Mel-8704R-MADD
Magnetic Anomaly Deviation Detector

The Mel-8704R-MADD was designed to detect minute fluctuations, oscillations, and disturbances in the Earth�s Natural Magnetic Field, while avoiding pulsations and resonances related to the earth�s atmosphere.  Field strength and proximity changes are depicted using bi-color LED�s and audible tones.
Operating Sequence
To activate the MADD, pop open the tilt stand located at the rear of the Mel and depress the white button.  The device will go through a quick diagnostic routine and flash the Red and Green LED�s.  A single Yellow LED is used to indicate Power is ON.  The Mel-8704R-MADD also performs an automatic Baseline at power ON, and defaults to sensitivity level of 1.  There are a total of 5 sensitivity levels that can be easily activated depending on the individual environment and investigative circumstances.
In sensitivity level 1, the user should be able to move about freely with the device in their hands.  When small natural fluctuation occurs, the user can easily baseline the instrument to see if there are any other unusual disturbances present.  This technique will allow you to analyze the situation better and make a more informed decision as to the cause of the signal detection.  The user should remember that we are surrounded by waves of invisible energy and magnetic fields created by the earth�s rotation around its core.  The device will easily detect these field changes, especially in the higher sensitivity ranges as you walk thru them.
Red & Green LED�s
The instrument can differentiate North and South Magnetic poles.  Use any magnet to demonstrate the device sensitivity.  The detection �sweet spot� is located at the top left side.
Side Buttons � Baseline & Sensitivity
The button labeled �Zero� is the baseline button.  This button is used to baseline and Zero the device at any time.  The other button labeled �Range� is for the sensitivity selection.  As mentioned earlier, there are 5 sensitivity levels to choose from.  When you turn the instrument ON, it automatically goes to level 1.  You would then momentarily press the button to go to sensitivity 2, 3, 4, & 5 in sequence.  Also notice that there are LED�s that will light up indicating what the level selection is.  Level 2 = 2 LED�s, Level 3 = 3 LED�s, etc.
When you use the higher sensitivity levels 4 & 5, the sound is mute on the first 2 LED�s after the power LED.  There is a �trigger� that reactivates the sound on LED�s 3 � 5.
Turning the Sound OFF / ON
You can Mute the sound for the Green / Red or both LED�s. 
Red Mute � Hold the baseline button until all Red LED�s are ON and then release the button.
Green Mute � Hold the baseline button until all Green LED�s are ON and then release the button.
Red & Green Mute � Hold the baseline button until Red & Green are on together then release the button.
Reset Back to Audible � Hold the baseline button until just the Yellow power light is ON and then release.  Or, turn the power OFF / ON.

The Mel-8704R-GF includes all of the standard Mel features plus there is a very sensitive 3-Axis Vibration detection circuit built in. Six LEDs' are used for Vibration display: (2) Red for X-Axis, (2) Green for Y-Axis and (2) Blue for Z-Axis. In addition, there is audio on/off select for sound. Each individual Axis will produce a unique tone that allows the user to easily determine the direction of Vibration influence on the Mel meter.
